How does Ottr secure the private keys to my wallets?

Automatic Backups

When you create a wallet in Ottr, your private key and recovery phrase are automatically saved on your phone — in iCloud for Apple or on Google Drive for Android.

How to Verify Backups are Working:

1. Hit Wallet dropdown in Home, click Manage Wallets

2. Click on the wallet that you want to verify has been backed up

3. In the iCloud Backup section, you should see the date of the last backup

Multi-layer Encryption

Ottr saves your secrets in encrypted formats. Even if someone gets access to your iCloud or Google Drive, they won’t be able to use your secrets. Moreover, multiple systems must validate at the same time before you can retrieve the encrypted keys from your iCloud/Google Drive.

How should I keep my wallet secure?

The Ottr app allows you to secure your secrets without the need to remember them.

To ensure successful backups, it is important that:

  1. you always have access to your iCloud. If you want to use a new iCloud, you must migrate your old iCloud. To save trouble, it’s best to just use one iCloud account.
  2. Your iCloud is backing up properly.

If the backup tools are not working properly, the app might prompt you to resolve it (see Error with Backups).

If you have a new phone or you lost your old phone, no problem! Just make sure to set up iCloud on your new phone and verify that the Ottr app has retrieved all your wallets. (see I have a new phone)

If you lose your private keys and you lose access to your iCloud or Google Drive account, you may lose access to your wallet forever. Please make sure your recovery emails or devices for your iCloud and Google Drive accounts are all operating correctly. We cannot recover your wallet and the assets in it if you lose access to these backup systems.
